Enhanced Integration Capacity Analysis (ICA)
This analysis quantifies the capability of the system to integrate Distributed Energy Resources (DER) within thermal ratings, power quality, system protection limits, and safety standards of existing equipment. Results are dependent on the most limiting of the various power system criteria.
Integration Capacity Analysis
Substations are shown on the ICA map as square symbols from the initial global view of SDG&E’s service territory. Placement of the cursor and clicking on the substation symbol will bring up a pop-up window to show: substation name, voltage and yearly load profile.
The distribution feeders are viewable as the user zooms in closer to the service territory and are shown as distinctly colored lines on the display. To display available capacity on the distribution system down to the line section or node level the user can simply click on a particular line segment. Branches extending from the mainline feeder are not shown. Placement of the cursor and clicking on the feeder symbol will bring up a pop-up window to show: circuit number, voltage, % of customers, existing generation, and queued generation along with a yearly load profile.
Line Section Location
As the user zooms further in, the display will show the line sections or node level more distinctly. The line segments and nodes are still shown as a colored line sections. Placement of the cursor and clicking on the line section will bring up a pop-up window to show: circuit number, voltage, line segment name, the minimum value of uniform interconnection capacity value, the minimum value of uniform interconnection load value and the PV interconnection capacity value at 12 noon.

Locational Net Benefit Analysis (LNBA) Layer
Along with mapping the integration capacity analysis (ICA) results SDG&E has also identified and mapped areas where deploying distribution energy resources could potentially defer or mitigate the need for planned infrastructure projects. The intention of this mapping layer is to delineate where there are relatively greater opportunities to avoid costs by installing DERs in SDG&E’s distribution network. The avoided costs achieved by deferring a capital investment will be considered in addition to any system level costs a DER may be able to provide (i.e. avoided energy, avoided resource adequacy, avoided emissions etc.)
Identifying Utility Investment Deferral Opportunities
The LNBA layer shows areas in SDG&E’s system in which deploying DERs may defer a utility investment of some kind. The layer shows this by outlining the portions of feeders where reducing load would defer/eliminate the need to make an investment. The outlines are colored based on the relative cost of the project per kW of need. As of today the project outlines will be colored based on the following scale of project costs.

LNBA Timeframe Layers
The LNBA is also comprised of various timeframe layers. The timeframe layers serve in showing the timeframe of planned utility investment and therein the timeframe in which DERs would need to be implemented in order to defer investment and achieve avoided costs. The timeframes consist of short, medium, and long term timelines which correspond to planned utility investment within 0-3 years, 3-6 years, and 6-10 years respectively. The default LNBA layer map view will display projects with all timeframe layers toggled on (effectively showing all known deferrable projects), but the user may toggle the timeframe layer so that only certain timeframes are shown. Each project timeframe is also based on a specific distribution loading forecast either accounting for the IPER trajectory DER forecast, or the IPER high DER growth scenario forecast. As the distribution forecast changes the needs to defer the projects change correspondingly.
LNBA Project Data
The user of maps can click on each identified deferrable project areas to bring up data associated with each of the projects such as the distribution circuit(s) ID the voltage class of the circuit, project description etc. Furthermore, included in the project data pop up is a link to download the larger LNBA Demo B dataset. The data set includes a more detailed project description and an excel file of the electrical characteristics required to defer the need for the project for each of the next 10 years. The electrical characteristics are represented as the hourly load reductions required for every day of each month to insure system integrity. Ideally any DER proposal would attempt to deploy DER technologies that are highly coincident with the required electrical characteristic curves in order to achieve the most deferral possible and the highest avoided costs.
Accessing the Map
In order to view the map, you are required to register with SDG&E. Once registered, an email that contains a web link, username, password, and instructions to access/ use the map will be sent to your email address.

- The interactive substation area map is intended to show the general substation area and not a specific point of interconnection. The interconnection customer must meet with SDG&E to confirm the substation interconnection point.
- The interactive feeder map is not intended for an interconnection customer to identify the exact location for interconnection. The interconnection customer must meet with SDG&E to confirm the interconnection point.
- Feeder branch routes are not shown on the interactive map as they generally have limited capacity for interconnection. Should a branch be proposed as the point of interconnection it is likely that potentially significant distribution branch upgrades will be required to facilitate the interconnection.
- The interactive website map is not intended for construction.
- Interconnection to the distribution system may also impact the transmission system and will require additional analysis.
- All interconnection requests shall follow applicable interconnection requirements.
