What is Smart Grid?
Our electric system is more than 100 years old, and although it has served us well, it needs upgrading. The system was not designed to accommodate intermittent generation from sources like wind and solar, which only provide energy when Mother Nature allows. Also, the grid must be modernized to keep up with innovations in technology that power our daily lives.
With a smarter grid, energy can be delivered more efficiently through a two-way power flow and allow integration of renewable sources. The two-way system provides instantaneous feedback on system operations, outages and end use. It uses that real- time monitoring to optimize its performance and anticipate problems and can also isolate parts of the network to prevent small-scale interruptions from turning into region-wide blackouts.
